NPR political commentator Cokie Roberts says every member of Congress should read the book Arthur Vandenberg: The Man in the Middle of the American Century for a lesson in leadership. Its author is Grand Rapids businessman Hank Meijer who spoke Wednesday night at a World Affairs Council of Western Michigan event.

Recently, WGVU spoke with Meijer about the book before a recording of West Michigan Week

“The week I sent it to the publisher earlier this year, the final draft, it felt like I was talking about a bygone era.”


Wednesday, November 22nd at 10 PM on WGVU Public Television, FRONTLINE presents Poor Kids. This is the 2018 update on the three families living in poverty as told through the eyes of their children. WGVU spoke with the producer of Poor Kids.

In 2012 Frontline introduced audiences to three kids living in poverty. Have conditions changed five years later?

“Through this film you get to learn what their fears are what they worry about and that’s what I think is quite crushing is that you realize how much anxiety there is even in a nine year olds life.”

Tomorrow at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia the USS Gerald R. Ford will be commissioned. The first of the new super class carrier is a $13 billion marvel that will officially be placed on active duty Saturday.

In Grand Rapids, the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum is hosting commissioning ceremony events.

“Well, it’s not every day that someone has an aircraft carrier named after them.”

That’s Joel Westphal, Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum and Library Deputy Director.

Jimmie Stagger at WGVU's Local Blues Matters (Part I)

Local Blues Matters returns to Billy's Lounge for the 8th annual concert celebrating WGVU's blues programming. Big Boss Blues Band and Detroit's Queen of the Blues, Thornetta Davis, will be performing along with West Michigan's legend of the blues, Jimmie Stagger.

In part of his two part interview, WGVU's music director, Scott Vander Werf, talks with Stagger who has been performing the blues for over a half a century.
