Michigan officials have named Newaygo County the state’s newest Michigan Promise Zone. Local leaders say the scholarship program will offer educational –and economic – opportunities for the community.

Today on Midday West Michigan, WGVU talks to Newaygo County RESA Superintendent Lori Tubbergan Clark about the program, its impact, and what happens next.

Grand Valley State University held a special ceremony in its fieldhouse  honoring retiring Athletic Director, Tim Selgo.  It named the GVSU trophy hall the "Tim W. Selgo Showcase of Champions. " 

Bluesman Larry McCray headlines Local Blues Matters

International blues star Larry McCray is headling Local Blues Matters on Saturday, April 16th, at Billy's Lounge in Eastown, Grand Rapids.  McCray has been recording and touring for over 30 years.  In a feature interview, McCray reflects on his musical career, his process of composing music and what the audience in Grand Rapids can expect at Billy's Lounge.

In a press conference held on campus Thursday, April 7th, Grand Valley State University Vice President for Finance and Administration, Jim Bachmeier, announced the hiring of Keri Becker as the GVSU Director of Athletics.

Keri Becker will replace the retiring Tim Selgo.  She is the sixth Athletic Director in GVSU history and the first Women to hold the position.

  Downtown Grand Rapids' movie theater projects has developers thinking big. Grand Valley State University is looking for new ways to foster entrepreneurial growth. Also, a leadership change at Perrigo following the resignation of former Chairman and CEO, Joe Papa.

Eye In The Sky opens in theaters in western Michigan today.  The film examines the implications of modern warfare.  God's Not Dead 2, a faith based drama with a Michigan connection also opens today, along with the comedies Hello, My Name is Doris and Meet The Blacks.  Plus, the latest film by acclaimed director Terrence Malick Knight Of Cups.  WGVU talks with Ron Van Timeeran from Celebration Cinema about these movies and the Indie films opening.

A recent poll conducted by Lansing-based EPIC-MRA asked 600 likely November 2016 voters for their opinion of Republican and Democratic presidential election candidates along with their impression of Governor Rick Snyder in the aftermath of the Flint water crisis. WGVU talks with Bernie Porn, President of EPIC-MRA.

The Grand Valley State University Women's Basketball team won the Midwest Regional Championship and made it all the way to the NCAA final four before bowing out.  Brent Ashcroft has the story of how they won four straight tournament games as underdogs.   

The mission of Read Muskegon "is to positively impact the lives of adults through improved literacy." It's website tells readers, "According to the State of Literacy in America, 21% of Muskegon County residents 16 years or older function at the lowest literacy level." Read Muskegon offers a number of adult literacy programs including literacy programs for incarcerated men as a sentencing condition for release.
