Michigan exports several billion dollars in automotive and agriculture goods to Canada and Mexico each year. With the United States renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement with its neighbors, non-profit regional development organization, The Right Place, along with the Van Andel Global Trade Center invited area business leaders to meet privately with the Canadian Consul General for an update on negotiations.

The Grand Rapids area is one of dozens of North American cities competing to land Amazon's second headquarters. Birgit Klohs, President of regional economic development organization The Right Place, says her organization recently submitted a 108-page proposal to the online shopping giant in the hopes of luring Amazon to West Michigan.

Klohs recently spoke with WGVU, and discussed how crafting the proposal was different from other applications.

Michigan State University officially opened its $88 million Grand Rapids Research with a ribbon cutting.

“One, two, three…”

Lead by Michigan State University President Lou Anna Simon, a giant green ribbon was cut opening the Medical School’s six-story, nearly 163,000-square-foot Grand Rapids Research Center.

“Imagine people who are thinking about things that we can’t yet imagine. Ideas that may work, they may not. But they’re all about trying to improve the quality of life.”

The Economic Club of Grand Rapids has been naming a Business Person of the Year for nearly three decades. The first recipient of the award honoring leaders contributing to, and supportive of, the West Michigan business community dates back to Richard DeVos in 1988.

This week, for the first time, a women has been bestowed the honor. Since 1987, Birgit Klohs has guided regional nonprofit economic development organization,The Right Place.

Local economic development organization The Right Place unveiled their strategic 3 year plan that hopes to bring hundreds of millions of dollars into the West Michigan economy over the next 3 years. 

$500 million in new capital investment, $150 million in new retainable payroll, and 4200 new jobs are the goals of The Right Place by 2019. While some local economists have forecast a West Michigan recession by 2019, Right Place Birgit Klohs says she believes those projections are still attainable.

A 160-year old international company officially opened it’s a state-of-the-art innovation center in Grand Rapids

Hutchinson’s world headquarters is located just outside Paris, France. Its first location in the United States is Grand Rapids. The automotive, aerospace and defense manufacturer employs 300 people at its 30-acre campus at 460 Fuller Avenue. This is where Hutchinson has opened its first North American Innovation Center.
