Governor Gretchen Whitmer says the state needs to do more work with small and geographically-disadvantaged businesses.

She signed an executive directive Friday. It requires the state Department of Technology, Management, and Budget to work with state agencies and small business organizations to come up with policies to increase purchases and contracts from those types of businesses.

Michelle Sourie Robinson is with the Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council. That’s a non-profit that works with minority businesses enterprises. She says this will help meet their members’ needs.

“One of the things our constituents said is we need access and simply want to be able to compete as everyone else competes to be able to be a part of state procurement.”

This is the 8th executive directive Whitmer has signed during her first week in office.
