What is the risk of marijuana addiction?

Andre Guerra

The most recent version from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health from 2016, found that about 4 million people meet the behavior diagnosis of a marijuana use disorder.

Licensed professional counselor from Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services,  Scott Nuismer, argues  the recovery process will be more difficult because the drug is considered quote on quote “safe” by the government.

“Why would I give this up. If it’s medically indicated for me. If I am using it appropriately. I don’t care that I am using more and more over time.”

In his professional opinion, he says that individuals who did not feel secure, valued, or enough growing up are more likely to abuse marijuana, or other drugs like alcohol.

Nuismer has not worked with any clients who have experienced a chemical withdrawal from marijuana use, but has treated individuals who experience an emotional withdrawal.

He explains an emotional addictions this way:

“Emotionally it helps me get through the day or I get used to feeling this way, and so when I am not feeling that way I feel like there is this gap that I almost feel naked without it;  and so now I am just kind of like I am in the habit.”

Nuismer says that there is a safe way to use marijuana, but not recreationally.

“As long as it is medically indicated, used appropriately, used as prescribed then it can be very very effective. It is no secret that marijuana has positive effects.”
