Voting overhaul group files signatures for 2018 ballot

A group called Promote the Vote says it wants to improve Michigan residents’ access to the voting booth.

The coalition submitted more than 400-thousand signatures to get a measure the 20-18 ballot.

Promote the Vote wants to allow for no reason absentee voting and let people register to vote on the day of an election.

Its proposal also calls for an audit of election results to ensure their integrity.

Fred Woodhams is with the Secretary of State’s office. He says the office doesn’t take a position on ballot proposals. However, he says Secretary Ruth Johnson has worked to ensure the integrity of the state’s elections.

“Overall Michigan has a very good election system, we’re very proud of it, we think it’ a national model.”

Woodhams says the office already does audits after elections. He says that was started in 20-13 as part of Johnson’s election integrity plan. The proposal does not specify what types of audits it calls for.
