State Legislature puts auto-no fault insurance changes at top of priority list

Republicans in the Michigan Senate say lowering the cost of car insurance is priority number one this session.

The Senate introduced its first bills today. And they’re hoping to finally make changes to auto no-fault insurance.

Trying to lower Michigan’s car insurance rates – among the highest in the nation - has become an annual issue in the state Legislature.

Michigan requires unlimited lifetime benefits. Some say the way to lower costs is to get rid of that mandate. Others say keep those benefits but stop insurance companies from considering things like gender and zip code when deciding a person’s rate.

Republican Senator Aric Nesbitt is a bill sponsor.

“I want to make sure everything is on the table and want to work with everybody to try to bring them to the table.”

The current bill is just an intent bill – meaning it has no specific proposals yet. Nesbitt says the details will be worked out during the committee process.
