Inspired MSU graduate student collects donations for separated children

The forced separation of children from their parents at the United States and Mexico border has fueled days of intense debate over the government’s current immigration policies.

Keeping a close eye on the debate has been Michigan State University graduate student Ali Van Overbeke.

She says, she found the thought of being separated from her parents at a young age so alarming, she reached out to social media and started collecting donations for immigrant children who are displaced in West Michigan.

And the response she says, has been "incredible."

In this conversation, WGVU’s Daniel Boothe and Van Overbeke discuss how the idea came to be, and the reaction it has received.
