Grand Rapids Women's March set for this weekend

The day after President Donald Trump’s 2017 inauguration, women gathered in Washington D.C. and across the nation protesting a history of offensive statements toward women made by the president. It’s considered the largest single-day, national protest.

Raina Cook is the new organizer this year for the local women’s march. She says the goal this year is to get more people involved in the community and to be more inclusive to all women.

Speakers at the event will represent people from the entire community. This includes black, indigenous, Hispanic and LGBT communities, sex workers and more. Cook says, historically feminism hasn’t always been inclusive of all women.

“A lot of what we see with feminism these days is white woman-centered and it leaves out a very huge part of the country and the world in general when it comes to women and fem-presenting people,” Cook said.

Community organizations focusing on local issues like public health, women in the workplace, and lead in homes will also be represented at the event.

The march is set for 1 p.m. this Saturday at Calder Plaza. Cook says there will be speakers before and after the 40 minute march around downtown.
