In a statewide poll Michigan voters overwhelmingly support expanding overtime pay.
Lansing-based EPIC-MRA recently surveyed 600 registered Michigan voters asking this question: There is a proposal under consideration for either Michigan’s Legislature or Michigan’s next governor that would guarantee time-and-a-half overtime pay for salaried workers who earn up to $47,000 per year when they work more than 40 hours per week. 275,000 Michigan residents would be guaranteed overtime pay if this proposal was adopted. Would you favor or oppose this proposal?
Seventy-five percent favor this proposal with 18 percent opposed. By party those in favor votes break 85 percent Democrat, 67 percent Republican and 65 percent Independent along with 65 percent of Tea Party members in support.
In its news release, Epic-MRA explains that, “Under the current federal standard, which hasn’t been updated since 2004, workers making just $23,660 annually can lose the right to overtime pay.”
The survey was commissioned by the State Innovation Exchange and the National Employment Law Project Action Fund.
The Epic-MRA poll has a 4% +/- margin for error.
