The Better Business Bureau serving Western Michigan has compiled its list of the top scams of 2018.  They’re hoping area residents can avoid these pitfalls in 2019 and they have a couple of tips to help in the New Year.

Scammers were on the move in 2018… and the Better Business Bureau serving Western Michigan wants you to be aware of the numerous scams and how to avoid them.  They’ve created a list of the top ten from 2018.

“The first one is by far and away the most popular scam. 25 % of all scams reported to us fell into this category. It’s online purchases and fake websites.”

That’s Troy Baker, Communications Manager at BBB of Western Michigan says during the holidays is when they saw a lot of activity relating to fake websites.

“Websites that look real.  Usually they’re offering amazing deals on things you want to get.  But what really happens is you pay for the product and you never get it then your credit card is used elsewhere because they stole your information.”

Baker says coming in at number two on their top ten list was debt collections.

“The scammers call you and say you owe a debt.  And really use high pressure tactics to get you to pay them. Usually it’s not by sending a check to them, usually they want an alternative method, like gift cards in some form.”

The list goes on to include employment scams, government grant offers, tax collection, lottery/sweepstakes scams and more. The complete list is on their website.  Baker says in this New Year, we should be cautious and do some investigating before putting forth any funds.

“Look at the company or website being offered. Use google. Google is your friend. Check them out at the Better Business Bureau at BBB.Org.  You can also call us at the BBB if you’re not sure.  But do your research before sending anybody anything.”
