As the Gerald R. Ford International Airport continues to see record breaking growth, officials announced Allegiant Air will be opening a new base at the airport that promises more direct flights out of Grand Rapids.

Allegiant Air officials along with local economic developer the Right Place announced Tuesday the airline will be opening a new base at the Gerald R. Ford airport next year, which will house two Airbus aircraft.

Tim Mroz is the Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at The Right Place. He says, the expansion has a capital investment nearly $43 million, resulting in the creation of at least 66 new jobs.

“The great thing about this is, what they are going to be looking to hire are highly technical positions, so, aircraft maintenance, technicians, things like that, more importantly, the incredible thing is that these jobs are going to pay double what the average wage is in the state of Michigan is,” Mroz said.

Based in Nevada, Allegiant Air plans to begin its base operations at Gerald R. Ford International Airport on June 4, 2019.

As part of today’s presentation, the company also announced service to two new cities– Nashville, Tennessee and Savannah, Georgia.
