The U.S. Coast Guard station in Traverse City is hosting an open house ahead of this year's National Cherry Festival, featuring aircraft that will perform over the weekend.

The air show is a traditional festival highlight.

It will include the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels, whose F/A-18 jets and C-130 support plane will be on hand, along with aircraft and personnel from the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Coast Guard.

Another attraction will be Piper, the Cherry Capital Airport's wildlife-control dog who has become an Internet sensation by keeping runways clear of birds and other critters.

The festival runs from Saturday through July 6 and includes the usual lineup of concerts, races, parades and other activities.

The National Cherry Queen will be crowned and vendors will offer local farm goods.
